What the Ombuds Office Does:

  • Listens to concerns
  • Reviews possible options
  • Explains university policies and procedures
  • Facilitates communication between people
  • Provides information about formal and informal grievance options
  • Mediates as appropriate
  • Makes referrals
  • Points out patterns of problems/complaints to administrators

What the Ombuds Office Does Not Do:

  • Tell people what they should do
  • Take sides in a dispute
  • Determine guilt or innocence
  • Receive official “notice” for the university about complaints
  • Give legal advice
